FOR THE WOMEN OF TOMORROW

SCHOLARSHIPS AT LORETO SCHOOL

CONTEXT

Illiteracy is one of the consequences of extreme poverty and conflict in South Sudan. Women live a strong condition of social oppression and gender inequality and suffer this burden. An example of this is the practice of forced marriages, which takes them away from the opportunity to access any education.

Over 80% of South Sudanese women can not read or write; 50% are forced to marry before the age of 18. In the Lakes region alone, out of 26,000 school-age girls, only 98 enrolled in school. In South Sudan, it is more common for a young woman to die in childbirth than to complete secondary education.
